José on the "Koningslied"

In addition to Patty Brard, José Hoebee reacted to the release of the "King's song" or "Koningslied" which was meant to be sung at the inauguration of new Dutch King Willem-Alexander and which had to be scrapped following a public outcry (see news posted earlier today). The track (performed by 51 Dutch celebrities and written by John Ewbank) caused outrage among some when it came out, despite it going straight to the top of Holland's iTunes charts. Some listeners disagreed with lyrics included in the song such as: ‘I build a dyke with my bare hands and keep the water away’ and ‘through wind and rain I’ll stand beside you… I’ll keep you safe as long as I live’.

José told De Telegraaf: "Respect for this song of John Ewbank. It is a beautiful composition performed by classy artists. OK, you cannot sing along to it and that's what the Netherlands want. I'm convinced that if a song for Obama was written and performed by American artists, it would be a hit. Even in the Netherlands...Our country seems to be too small for class. What a pity!!!"

Due to the controversy, the song was withdrawn but the coronation committee put it right back into its program.

José's new life in Hilversum

The latest issue of Privé magazine features an article about the new life of José Hoebee. Two months ago, the former lead singer of Luv' left her temporary accommodation in Muiderberg to move to Hilversum, NL (see news on February 23rd 2013). Because of her problems after her husband's death, José is still depressive and left 18 kilos. She has not overcome all her worries yet.
Jan Uriot and Marine Hauwert of the "Telegraaf/Privé" team talked about this article in their entertainment news program. To watch it, click here.

Patty's column on John Ewbank (the controversial songwriter of the "King's Song")

John Ewbank

Patty Brard wrote her latest column for Weekend Magazine about John Ewbank who caused controversy with his "Koningslied", a song that was written for the upcoming investiture of prince Willem-Alexander as King of the Netherlands. The five-minute track features 51 Dutch artists (including Ali B, Gerard Joling, Glennis Grace, Marco Borsato, and Paul de Leeuwand was due to be performed in front of the new monarch at the ceremony at the Ahoy sports arena in Rotterdam. It reached the first position on the Dutch iTunes charts.

Ewbank has been obliged to withdraw it after critics likened it to North Korean propaganda. Journalist Sylvia Witteman started an online petition entitled "In protest at this imbecilic King's Song, I hereby resign as a citizen of the Netherlands" and attracted more than 38,000 signatures. A real anti-Koningslied campaign happened on the social networks and the mass media. Even the serious "Financial Times" was among those criticizing the song, pointing out its "poor grammar, eclectic mix of styles and lack of a memorable refrain". Nevertheless, after its withdrawal, the coronation committee put it right back into its program.

Recently Patty met John Ewbank at the Schipol Airport as she was about to fly to Ibiza and briefly talked to him. She was shocked by the death threats he received on Twitter

Particularly offensive to the song's detractors is the part in the music video where singers break into a chant of “‘W’ is for Willem" and form the letter 'W' with their hands. So far, the video has been viewed more than 500,000 times on YouTube, with the majority of viewers giving it the thumbs-down.

"Echte Meisjes op de Prairie": the final

The final episode of RTL 5's reality show "Echte Meisjes op de Prairie" (hosted by Patty Brard) aired on April 23rd and drew 330.000 viewers (overall market share: 4.7%). The program features ten "reality stars" who had to compete for the title of "best cow boy or girl" in Utah. Ricardo Sibelo (former candidate of "De Gouden Kooi") won the competition and the €23.500 prize.

Although she praised the hysteria of some participants and considered that the show was entertainingPatty deplored in a recent column in Weekend magazine the poor viewing figures of the TV program (see news posted on March 28th 2013). However, #EMODP has been a trending topic on Twitter. Some episodes have hit the target audience (15-34 year old age group) and have reached the Top 5 of the daily Web TV report conceived by SKO (the Dutch audience measurement company) and based on streams. Despite these good results, the show has never achieved mainstream success. This failure is probably due to the fact that the "Echte Meisjes op de Prairie" was the third season of the "Echte Meisjes" series. The public has not been surprised. The 2011 and 2012 seasons scored better ratings.

Patty on Sylvie, Rafael & Sabia

Sylvie, Rafael & Sabia

Patty Brard's latest column in Weekend magazine deals with the TV personality Sylvie van der Vaart and her former husband, the footbaal star Rafael van der Vaart. In early April, Rafael confirmed his relationship with Sylvie's best friend Sabia who is the wife of Raf's Hamburg teammate Khalid Boulahrouz. This "soap opera" has been front-page news in Holland and Germany.

As a wise person, Patty gave Sylvie good advice. According to the diva, the 35-year-old woman missed the essence of life. Miss Brard wrote: "I remember when I was in my early 30s and I often thought: "Do I miss something? Do I have to jet-set in Monaco and Ibiza?" I was on the most beautiful yachts, had houses in Los Angeles and Rome. We celebrated Easter with Princess Caroline, I jumped on Mickey Rourke's Harley and raced off down the road and then you're 30. Thirty...what a terrible age. You're constantly afraid of losing something because you think you won't be "in" after your 35th birthday."

A former member of "Marga's Luv" on a TV talent show

In the early 1990s, Luv's lineup consisted of Marga Scheide (the only original member), Diana van Berlo and Carina Lemoine. This version of the girl group was nicknamed "Marga's Luv'" by the fans (see Chapter VII of the trio's biography).

On April 12th, Carina appeared on a TV talent show "Bloed, Zweet & Tranen" (Blood, Sweat & Tears) which attracted 724.000 viewers (overall market share: 9.6%). This music program airs every Friday on SBS 6 and is hosted by Jeroen van der Boom. The jury is composed of two teams: André jr. Hazes with Danny de Munk and Roxeanne Hazes with Gerard Joling. They have to find the new star of the "Nederlandse Lied" (Pop music in Dutch language). The first phase of the contest dealt with auditions. Carina Lemoine sang "Dokter Bernhard" (originally performed by Bonnie St. Claire). The singer was praised for her vocal talent and was selected for the next level of the competition.

Patty has no comment on her relationship with her daughter

Patty Brard keeps a strict silence on her difficult relationship with her daughter Priscilla. Ten years ago, the diva and Priscilla starred in the high-rated reality show "Patty's Posse". Soon after the taping of the TV program, the two women argued and were not on speaking terms. In a recent interview for Party magazine, when asked if as a mother of a self-confident daughter she had any experience of dealing with hysterical characters like the candidates of her show "Echte Meisjes", La Brard replied: "if this is a attempt to talk about my daughter then we can stop this conversation."

However, she accepted to speak about her famous cousin Stanley Brard (a retired soccer player). "He is currently head scout at Feyenoord Rotterdam and had an offer from FC Chabala in Azerbaijan. He could make a good living there," she said.

Patty's opinion on Mustafa Marghadi's style

Mustafa Marghadi

As an experienced TV personality, Patty Brard often expresses her opinion on formats and presenters. Her latest column posted on the website of Weekend magazine deals with the style of Mustafa Marghadi (who anchors the news program "NOS op 3"). The young man looks neglected according to Patty and should iron his T-shirts. By extension, the diva puts the blame on the other NOS presenters. "Give them a blue costume with five clean and ironed shirts for the whole week and oblige them to go to the hairdresser once a month," she wrote.

Mustafa reacted this afternoon to Patty's remarks on the "Coen & Sanders show" which aired on BNN/3FM radio station:

Patty on Gordon's "Hotter Than My Daughter"

In her latest column in Weekend magazine, Patty Brard expressed her admiration for RTL 4's reality show "Hotter Than My Daughter" (hosted by Pop singer/TV host Gordon). This Endemol program focuses on mother/daughter relationships in which the mothers claim to be hotter than their daughters. Each episode averages 1.5 million viewers. Gordon visits the home of a family, where the daughter is embarrassed by the way her mother dresses and acts and the mother thinks her daughter should dress more her age. Patty wrote: "You can say whatever you want about Gordon but what he does is funny!" The diva compared "Hotter Than My Daughter" with her current TV project called "Lust, Liefde Of Laten Lopen" (the Dutch version of "Snog Marry Avoid?which will air from May 6th on RTL 5). The two formats seem to be similar but in Gordon's program, the daughters want to change their moms looks whereas in Pat's show, the mothers want to give their daughters a make-under.

Patty's "Echte Meisjes" show takes advantage of Barbie's success

Last week, Patty Brard regretted the bad viewing figures of "Echte Meisjes op de Prairie" on RTL 5 (see news posted on March 28th 2013).  Yesterday's episode gained audience and attracted 349.000 viewers (overall market share: 5%). This increase is due to the good performance of the reality show "Huisje Bompje Barbie" (featuring Samantha de Jong better known as "Barbie") which aired before "Echte Meisjes". Barbie's program drew 815.000 viewers (overall market share: 11%). Though Patty has not reached mainstream success with her "Real Girls", she has expressed satisfaction today by posting this message on Twitter: "To score good ratings among the target audience is also fine! #echtemeisjesopdeprairie  have a nice day!" The target audience of #EMODP is the 15-34 year old age group. Moreover, the program is still a trending topic on social networks.

Bart van de Laar's case reopened?

Bart Van de Laar was a successful record executive in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This openly gay man had a flamboyant lifestyle. He was involved in Carrere/CNR records. In October 1979, Luv' signed a 750.000 Dutch guilder deal with him after the group left Philips/Phonogram. The business man paid the ladies Concorde and private jet flights, Champagne bottles and prestigious parties. Under his guidance, the trio scored two big hits: the single "Ooh, Yes I Do" (#2 in Denmark, #5 in Holland, #7 in Belgium, #27 in Germany, #10 in France, #13 in Austria, #10 on the Europarade, certified gold in Mexico) and the album "True Luv" (which sold 50.000 copies in Holland alone and thus went gold).

The "showbiz transfer of 1979": Luv' left Philips/Phonogram to sign a lucrative contract with CNR/Carrere.

José and her Luv' colleagues earned a gold record for their CNR/Carrere album "True Luv" in 1980

In association with WEA Netherlands, Van de Laar later ran the short-lived TTR label with his partners Ruud Wijnands and German entrepreneur Rolf Baierle. In addition to Luv', his artist roster included Francis Goya, Corry Konings, Babe, Benny Neyman and Lenny Kuhr. On November 10th, 1981 he was shot dead in Hilversum. Gay prostitute Martien Hunnik was condemned for his murder and was released from prison in the early 1990's. Van de Laar's death remained a mystery. In April 2009, Marga Scheide and José Hoebee appeared on RTL 4's paranormal show "Het Zesde Zintuig" (the Sixth Sense) to tell their memories of the record producer. This TV program featured mediums who analysed the crime scene and felt that his assassination might be linked to his activities. Van de Laar had indeed made many enemies in the showbiz. A cold case team set up by the newspaper "De Telegraaf" investigated the homicide in 2010 and revealed contradictions. Recently,  Geert-Jan Knoops, Hunnik's lawyer and the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (Openbaar Ministerie) asked for the reopening of the case because of a possible miscarriage of justice. The Supreme Court of the Netherlands has to make a decision. On March 21st, RTL Boulevard covered the news and therefore interviewed Marga. The former Luv' singer described the late producer as a man "full of energy, always laughing and one of a kind".
