Shocking news: 19-year-old gunman storms into Dutch TV studio and demands airtime

Yesterday evening, a 19-year-old man identified in Dutch media as 'Tarik Zahzah' forced his way into the studio of Dutch public broadcaster NOS in Hilversum - demanding to be put on air.

Cameras were shut down for an hour as the suspect, who was wearing a formal black suit and tie, seized control of the studio. The gunman took the security guard hostage and said he wanted air time.

It is believed that NOS was targeted because it produces the most widely watched newscast in the Netherlands and guaranteed the gunman the biggest audience.

Police said the man threatened to detonate bombs in several locations around the Netherlands if he was stopped from going on-air.

Dramatic footage aired on Dutch TV shows the gunman pacing the studio with a silenced pistol behind his back.

The armed Dutchman, who lives in the central Dutch town of Pijnacker, near the university town Delft, was taken into an empty studio by a quick-thinking security guard.

"This is taking too long," the gunman can be heard saying in the deserted studio.

The teen was instead quickly arrested.  Police could be heard shouting "drop it, drop it and get on your knees" as they stormed the studio with guns trained on the 19-year-old. No-one was injured and no shots were fired during the arrest, which took place some ten minutes after the teen entered the studio wielding the weapon. Police special forces swept the building for explosives but found nothing, police spokesman Christine Scholts said.

Three weeks after the bloody events at Charlie Hebdo in Paris, many questions are being asked about security at the NOS headquarters and at the Media Park in Hilversum where this incident took place and where many broadcasters are based.

Hilversum mayor Pieter Broertjes said on Friday that security would be increased and more police would be on duty.

Gunman arrested by the Police

Of course, Patty Brard (as a media personality working on SBS 6) reacted to this sad event on Facebook and Twitter. She called Tarik a "#Mafketel" (a "disturbed guy" in Dutch).

In Memoriam: Demis Roussos

On January 25th, Greek singer Demis Roussos died in Athens. He dominated the European charts as a solo performer in the 1970s after having been a member of Aphrodite's Child, a progressive rock group that also included Vangelis. Among his greatest hits were "Rain and Tears" (by Aphrodite's Child, 1968), "Goodbye My Love Goodbye" (1973), "My Friend the Wind" (1973), "Schönes Mädchen aus Arcadia" (1973), "Happy to Be on an Island in the Sun" (1975), "Quand Je T'Aime" (1987) and "On écrit sur les murs" (1989).

May he rest in peace.

To be honest, I was not a fan of his music but I've always respected the longevity of his career. My favourite Roussos track is the above-mentioned "Rain & Tears". I like the  psychedelic aspect of this song.

Aphrodite's Child (feat. Demis Roussos & Vangelis): Rain & Tears (1968)

In 1972, Demis took part in an "All Stars" project (with Vicky Leandros, Hildegard Knef, Sandra & Andres, Enrico Macias and Alice Babs) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the BBC. Luv' producer Hans van Hemert supervised the recording sessions of "Auntie" (released by Philips Records). This single peaked at #4 on the Dutch Top 40In the early years of the BBC, "Auntie" was used as a nickname for the British broadcaster. Hans once described this project as a "Herculean task". Eurovision conductor Harry van Hoof helped him with the orchestration. Hans was obliged to record each singer separately in several countries. Funny fact: when the music video for "Auntie" was filmed, Demis had not recorded his part yet. He was obliged to lip-sync to what Hans sang to him. Then they went to the studio to record his voice and later they switch the tape for the final mix.

In 1979, as a member of the Philips/Phonogram family, Demis attended the presentation of a gold record for the "Music by Candlelight" album (by Gheorghe Zamfir & Harry van Hoof). Will Hoebee produced this big selling LP. José, Big Mouth & Little Eve (Ingrid Kup and Willem Duynwere also present:

Patty not impressed by Trijntje's "Walk Along"

Trijntje Oosterhuis

In a recent column for Weekend magazine, Patty Brard told that she didn't believe in the potential of "Walk Along" (a song which will represent the Netherlands at the next Eurovision Song Contest). The track is performed by Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis. Just before Christmas, it entered the hit parade in Holland. It peaked at #7 on the Single Top 100 and at #38 on the Dutch Top 40. The current position on the Top 100 is #90

"I think: everything's good, the song, the singer but I don't feel the emotion. OK, it's a hit, even if it has experienced a fast decrease in the charts. I don't know if in five months I'll still be enthusiastic about it," the diva wrote.

Last year, Patty critcized "Calm after the storm" (by The Common Linnets) which finished second at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 (see news posted on May 19th, 2014).

Dutch Top 40: 50th anniversary

On January 2nd, the Dutch Top 40 (Nederlandse Top 40) celebrated its 50th anniversary. This weekly music chart (compiled by Stichting Nederlandse Top 40) started as a radio program entitled "Veronica Top 40" on the offshore station Radio Veronica

The first #1 hit on the Dutch Top 40 was "I Feel Fine" by The Beatles on January 2nd, 1965. In 1974, the Stichting Nederlandse Top 40 took over the famous hit parade and named it De Nederlandse Top 40. In addition to record sales, it later included airplay data, downloads and streaming. Currently, Radio 538 airs this list in association with Media Markt.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary, a book entitled "50 Jaar Top 40" (written by Martijn van Stuyvenberg) has been published by Kosmos Uitgevers and PostNL has released a set of special stamps.

As a successful pop group, Luv' dominated the Top 40 in the late 1970s. Because of their two chart toppers (You're the Greatest Lover and Trojan Horse), the ladies won two Veronica Awards in December 1978:
