Patty Brard: the Kruidvat Queen at the Huishoudbeurs

Since February 22nd, Patty Brard has been present at the stand of Kruidvat (Dutch chain of drugstores) at the 75th Huishoudbeurs (houseware fair) in Amsterdam. This event ends tomorrow.

The TV personality and Dutch-American model Mariana Verkerk opened the Huishoudbeurs last weekend.

La Brard has used the popular fair as a platform to present her collection of panther-print household items (From PB with love) and her forthcoming biography (written by Michel van Egmond and Antoinnette Scheulderman).

Thousands of people (unknowns and celebrities including Guido Spek, Laura Ponticorvo and Henny Huismanhave visited Patty's pop-up shop and posed with her for photos and videos posted on social media.

Patty and Gordon to host a daily talk show on SBS6

Two days ago, Talpa Network announced that Patty Brard and Gordon would host their own talk show on weekdays at 6.00 pm on SBS6. The program will be aired for the first time on April 6th.

Among the topical issues which will be discussed: Social media ruined my life. My kid is transgender. How can you live in poverty? Are gastric bypass patients fat and lazy people? Can you cheat on your partner if he or she doesn't want sex anymore?... Experts (such as lawyers, doctors or psychologists) will be present in addition to the people explaining their problems and the studio audience.

Patty and Gordon will host the TV program alternately from Monday to Thursday. They will present it together on Friday. To attend the tapings which will start on March 27th, please visit www.sbs6.nl/gordonenpatty

On February 27th, Patty and Gordon were interviewed by Eva Jinek to promote their new TV project on RTL 4's talk show "Jinek" (623.000 viewers/market share: 15.5%). Click here to watch the interview which starts at 49:29. Gordon explained that he went to America to meet the world-famous Dr. Phil (one of the Kings of talk shows) for advice. Catherine Keyl (very popular in the 1990s on Dutch TV) and Oprah Winfrey (the Empress of television) are inspirations for Pat & Gor

Moreover, Patty reacted to a video of the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment about the coronavirus. According to the ex-Luv' singer, this video was too sensationalist. "It's frightening. No wonder everybody's scared. The background music makes it worse," the diva told Jinek. "Recently, I've been to the Huishoudbeurs (houseware fair in Amsterdam) and I've shaken thousands of hands. If someone has to be in quarantine, it has to be me," she added.

After a succession of recent disappointments on the small screen (see my previous post), will La Brard's new project with Gordon be successful? Only time will tell...

Has Patty Brard lost the Midas touch on television?

It seems that Patty Brard has become less popular on the small screen. This situation raises several questions: Has the diva lost her Midas Touch on TV? How long will the TV executives wait before they consider giving her fewer programs to host or dismissing her?

Last year, after freelancing on television for several months, Patty Brard signed a 4-year deal with Talpa TV (which owns SBS6, Net5, SBS9 and Veronica) - see news posted on March 16th, 2019. This signature felt like a revenge for the ex-Luv' singer after Talpa got rid of her in 2017 considering her as "not fruity and fresh anymore". In 2018, Patty underwent a gastric bypass and lost 40 kilos. This drastic weight loss was combined with a change in her public image. The once turbulent drama queen of Dutch showbiz (who always took advantage of every platform to criticize Luv') tried to change into a nice and relaxed TV personality.

Since her return on SBS6 in 2019, the TV shows hosted by Patty have been disappointing in terms of viewing figures.

The infotainment program "6 inside" was a complete failure (see news posted on June 30th, 2019).

The repair show "Zo Goed Als Nieuw" scored mediocre TV ratings last Autumn (except the episode featuring the Meiland family whose presence boosted the viewing figures).

The celebrity figure skating competition "Dancing On Ice" had a promising start. The two first episodes were successful but the next ones lost the ratings war against the other TV networks.

Before Christmas, in a broadcast of AD Media Podcast, Dutch TV columnist Angela de Jong told that the recruitment of Patty Brard as a co-host on Net5's talk show "Ladies Night" was the death blow to this program (see news posted on December 16th, 2019).

The travel show "Patty en Gordon op zoek naar de eeuwige jeudg" (currently broadcast on SBS6) has not reached the desired results.

So what will be the future of the diva in the Talpa TV group? If the succession of TV misadventures goes on, will her career be in danger?

Last autumn, she cancelled her theater tour using her "hectic agenda on television" as an excuse (see news posted on October 6th, 2019). Wasn't she hiding the fact that disappointing ticket sales caused this cancellation?

Fortunately, Patty has other strings to her bow in addition to television. The larger than life entertainer has connections with the music world and is able to release new music. Last week, she launched her collection of panther-print household items at Kruidvat (a Dutch chain of drugstores). Next month, her biography written by Michel van Egmond and Antoinnette Scheulderman will come out on the day of her 65th birthday. So this tell-all publication will generate lots of publicity in the media.

So no matter what happens to the former Luv' lady, she will always be in the spotlight with or without success on TV.

Patty & Gordon looking for eternal youth: viewing figures on February 24th

Yesterday, the third episode of "Patty en Gordon op zoek naar de eeuwige jeugd" (SBS6's reality show featuring Patty Brard and Gordon) drew 429.000 viewers (market share: 7.5%). It didn't reach SKO's Dag Top 25 (the daily list of the 25 most-watched programs conceived by Dutch audience measurement company Stichting KijkOnderzoek). These are disappointing viewing figures for such a prime-time TV show.

For the purpose of this program, the two TV personalities travelled the world to look for healthy and alternative methods to find eternal youth. The third episode took place in Thailand.

Other TV shows scored better ratings:
  • Radar (NPO 1)1.561.000 viewers (market share: 27.4%)
  • Married At First Sight (RTL 4)982.000 viewers (market share: 17.1%)
  • Veronica Inside (Veronica)635.000 viewers (market share: 11.9%)

Ann-Maria: 40th anniversary

"Mexico's got love enough beneath each sombrero..."

Ann-Maria, Luv's tenth single, entered the Dutch Top 40 exactly 40 years ago, on February 23rd, 1980. This ABBA-esque pop song later appeared on the charts abroad.

History

The Luv' girls reached their peak in 1978 and 1979 in a large part of Continental Europe and overseas (including South Africa, Zimbabwe and New Zealand). They scored several popular hit records on the charts: U.O.Me, You're the Greatest Lover, Trojan Horse, Casanova, Eeny Meeny Miny Moe and Ooh, Yes I Do. Their three albums (With Luv', Lots Of Luv' and True Luv') sold well.

On December 31st, 1979, the group won the Conamus Export Prize for "best selling Dutch recording act abroad". The award was presented to Patty, Marga and José by the well known Dutch violinist Theo Olof during a live broadcast on TROS radio. More than 2.5 million records were sold outside the Netherlands in 1979.

The press announced Luv's achievement in early January 1980. The Conamus foundation (which promoted Dutch artists abroad) even publicized it at the MIDEM (the world's largest trade fair for the music industry) in Cannes, France.

What a triumphant way to start a new year and a new decade!

The first single that came out in 1980 was "Ann-Maria". It was the follow-up record to "Ooh, Yes I Do" and was taken from the trio's third album "True Luv". Due to its Mexican and Latino orchestration, this track had similarities with Boney M.'s El Lute and ABBA's Chiquitita and Fernando. This Piet Souer-penned song (produced by Hans van Hemert) featured a children's choir like ABBA's hit "I Have A Dream".

In Holland, "Ann-Maria" premiered on Mies Bouwman's TV show "Telebingo" on February 11th, 1980. Mies presented the trio as "Holland's best export product". The famous TV host had a short interview with the ladies just after their performance of "Ann-Maria". When asked how busy the group was, Patty Brard answered that they were on a promo tour through Europe (Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Wiesbaden, Zurich...). When asked which country was the best, Marga Scheide immediately replied "the Netherlands!". Then Mies asked Luv's blonde singer how she considered their success. "We work hard for it but it remains a wonder," she said.

Then Luv' sang "Ann-Maria" on other major European shows (including "Showbizzquiz" in Holland or "Musikladen" in Germany).

Luv' with Andy Gibb and Ellen Foley. Marga Scheide and Andy had an affair.

Moreover, a Spanish version of Ann-Maria was recorded by Luv' to conquer the Latin American markets. Indeed, the girl group had previously been successful with "Si, Que Si" (the Spanish version of "Ooh, Yes I Do") which turned gold in Mexico.

Chart performance

"Ann-Maria" peaked at #4 on the Nationale Hitparade and #11 on the Top 40 in the Netherlands, #10 on the BRT Top 30 and #14 on the Ultratop in Belgium and #37 on Musikmarkt/Media Control charts in Germany.

Poison pen letters make José Hoebee unhappy

Yesterday's edition of De Telegraaf revealed in its "Privé" section that poison pen letters about José Hoebee were sent to Dutch media. De Telegraaf's editorial staff received several messages (including mean comments about the former Luv' singer) from an anonymous source.

José has been ill for almost 6 months, which led to the recent break-up of Luv' (see news posted on February 7th, 2029).

One of the letters (insinuating that the artist was alcoholic) said:

"Dear editorial staff, José Hoebee has too much blood in her alcohol. When she performed during the funfair in Blaricum, she vomited on my shoes. Greetings from an ex-fan".

Brigitte Vis (of the Jan Vis booking agency in charge of Luv's live performances in the Netherlands) reacted to this letter. "These are cruel methods. This woman is ill and I can guarantee that it has nothing to do with alcohol. It makes José very unhappy. The first sentence is wrong. It must be a joke because this person should have written "alcohol in her blood" instead of "blood in her alcohol". I asked José what happened in Blaricum. This incident happened last year in August when she had to leave the stage before the end of the show. Indeed, it took place during the funfair in Blaricum. She performed with Luv' in a venue where the temperatures were high, " Brigitte told De Telegraaf.

"In the dressing room, José vomited accidentally on the shoes of her tour manager David Hay Gibson. No-one except David witnessed it. Meanwhile, Luv' singers Marga Scheide and Chimène van Oosterhout were finishing their show. The writer of the letter must be an insider because he or she knows the details. One thing is sure: David has not written this nonsense. We asked a graphologist to analyse the message. It must stop now! José suspects who did it. If we know who it is, we will first ask this person to stop. Otherwise, we will take her or him to court," Brigitte added.

Click here to watch a video posted on De Telegraaf website.

Yesterday, SBS6's entertainment news program "Shownieuws" featured a phone interview with José in its early evening edition (220.000 viewers/market share: 7%) and late evening edition (350.000 viewers/market share: 11.5%). "I became ill during a live show. Our tour manager David Hay Gibson supported me and took me to the dressing room. Then one week later the same thing happened. So I decided to stop. My problems are due to a tic in my mouth. It makes me nauseous," José said.
