Yesterday, José Hoebee took part in the "Stop Aids Now" benefit show at Café Queen's Head in Amsterdam. The singer and TV personality Henny Huisman were crowned Gay Queen and Gay King because of their popularity in the Dutch LGBT community. Viola Holt gave a speech to present the two celebrities.

José's friends (including Benny Neyman's widower Hans van Barneveld, Ger Lammens and Franck Riesenbeck) were present.

The other highlights of this fantastic evening were the performances of legendary R&B group "Mai Tai" and Luv's lookalike act "Luv' Unlimited".

Minor hits of Luv', José and Patty on "De 80's Tip 1758"

In the Netherlands, De Tipparade is a record chart that ranks songs that have not entered the Dutch Top 40. Recently, Radio Extra Gold set up De 80's Tip 1758 (songs from the 1980s that entered the Tipparade).

The 1989 line-up of Luv' (Marga Scheide, Diana van Berlo and Michelle Gold) appear in this list with "Starmaker" (#1624 - peak position on De Tipparade: #18). The ladies were involved in the charity project "The All Stars" with other Dutch acts (Desirée, Justian & Mandy, MC Miker G, Marjon, Nando, Oscare, Sisters).

José Hoebee scores seven songs on "De 80's Tip 1758". Here are their peak positions:
  • Time Goes By (1984): #1158 (peak position on De Tipparade: #12)
  • All Around My Hat (1986): #1135 (peak position on De Tipparade: #16)
  • I Can Hear Music (1983): #807 (peak position on De Tipparade: #11)
  • Hey Now, Watcha Gonna Do (1983): #531 (peak position on De Tipparade: #6)
  • Waarom (1985 - with Bonnie & Ron): #342 (peak position on De Tipparade: #2)
  • The Good Times (1982): #214 (peak position on De Tipparade: #2)
  • I'm So Sorry (1981): #44 (peak position on De Tipparade: #3)
These records didn't achieve the level of success of José's biggest hits: "I Will Follow Him" (1982), "Secret Love" (1982), "So Long Marianne" (1984 with Ron Bransteder) as well as two duets with Bonnie St. Claire "Cassandra" (1984) and "Zoals Vrienden Doen"(1985).

Patty Brard only scored one song:
  • Red Light (1986): #1257 (peak position on De Tipparade: #11)

Patty's column about "Nick & Simon"

Patty Brard's latest column for Weekend magazine deals with "Nick & Simon" (Dutch singer-songwriter duo composed of Simon Keizer and Nick Schilder). The gentlemen has been very popular in the Netherlands since 2006. In addition to their singing career, they were involved in several TV shows (including programs on AVROTROS, The Voice of Holland (RTL 4) en Lekker Nederlands (SBS 6). Recently, they signed an exclusive 3-year contract with SBS 6. Thus, Patty and the boys are now colleagues. The signature of their contract was announced on November 19th during the press presentation of SBS 2016 season. On the same day, La Brard and Uri Geller took presented their stillborn mentalist show "MindMasters Live" to the media (see news posted on November 19th, 2015).

Video: Patty in a parody of a TV commercial

Yesterday, Privé TV (De Telegraaf) posted a funny video on its website. Patty Brard played in a parody of a TV commercial to promote an invention which competed in the final of SBS 6's talent show "Het Best Idee Van Nederland". Click here to watch it. The aim of this program (hosted by Patty's colleague Jochem van Gelder) is to choose Holland's best inventor. The invention promoted by Patty in her video ("De Makkeliek" by Angelique Bakker) won the competition! What a coincidence!

"Het Best Idee" drew 543.000 viewers (market share: 8%).

Shownieuws: viewing figures on November 25th

On November 25th, the 11.00 pm edition of "Shownieuws" aired on SBS 9 instead of SBS 6 as it was an UEFA Champions League day. The entertainment news show featured Renate Gerschtanowitz, Patty Brard and Kees Tol. The program drew 258.000 viewers (market share: 5.4%)

MindMasters Live removed from SBS 6 schedule

Patty and mentalist Edwin

SBS 6 has just announced that "MindMasters Live" is removed from its schedule because of bad viewing figures. Yesterday, the second episode of the mentalist talent show (featuring Patty Brard in the jury) only attracted 496.000 viewers (market share: 7.2%). This is a complete failure for a prime time show. "MindMasters" didn't enter SKO's Dag Top 25 (the daily list of the 25 most-watched programs (conceived by Stichting KijkOnderzoek, Holland's audience measurement company). The TV program lost the ratings war against "The Voice of Holland" (RTL 4 - 2.397.000 viewers / market share: 34.7%), "DWDD University" (NPO 1 - 1.212.000 viewers / market share: 17.4%) and 2 Voor 12 (NPO 2 - 775.000 viewers / market share: 11.5%). Moreover, although #MindmastersLive was a trending topic on Twitter, the majority of tweets were negative.

MindMasters Live featured mentalists divided in two teams led by Walter Rolfo and Uri Geller. The contestants were judged by Dutch celebrities. Mentalist Edwin was eliminated from the competition.

The jury of MindMasters Live

An incident occured during an act: the mobile phone number of TV personality Kees Tool was revealed. The producer of the program, Stepping Stone, apologized to the young man.

Last week, the TV show had already scored disappointing viewing figures due to a major KPN outage in the Netherlands, leaving some 1.8 million people without television on Friday evening (see news posted on November 22nd, 2015). SBS 6 hoped that the situation would improve the following week. The channel counted on the presence of Sabia Engizek in the jury to boost TV ratings. The ex-girl friend of Dutch footballer Rafael van der Vaart has been the target of German and Dutch tabloid press for years and her participation in the talent show was used as a publicity stunt.

Marga & José in Weekend: will they be performing as Luv' again?

Recently, Dutch celebrity gossip magazine Weekend featured an article about pop, disco and dance groups from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s which are still touring. Marga Scheide and José Hoebee (of Luv') are mentioned with 2 Unlimited, Boney M. ft. Liz Mitchell, Brotherhood Of Man, The Pointer Sisters, Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block, Take That and Mai Tai.

Last month, the website of "Magic Music Magazine" and De Telegraaf announced that Marga and José could be booked as Luv' for performances in Germany (see news posted on October 27th, 2015). José put the record straight about a so-called "comeback" in an interview on Radio 10 and on her Facebook page (see news posted on October 28th, 2015). She explained that nothing had been decided yet. The singer was not really opposed to the idea of performing with Marga

To this day, a real comeback of Luv' has not been announced yet. But the article in Weekend gives hope to the fans. My Facebook friend and pop singer/music promoter Casper Janssen has scanned it and translated it in English for the non-Dutch admirers of the girl group. I would like to thank him.

"Almost forty years ago Patty, Marga and José scored big hits across Europe. Back then these beautiful young girls flew high accross the stage. Four decades later Marga and José still want to go on stage, for a nice amount of money. The dance routines have remained the same though they are a little more stiff. And the voices are a little lower, but thanks to the current techniques this is solved with tricks. So Marga and José don't have any problem to revive Luv' for the umpteenth time. Patty Brard is not allowed to rejoin. Her place will be, if requested, filled by the 64 year old Ria Tielsch, who already replaced Patty in 1980."

Interview with Marga Scheide (Moov.nl)

Marga Scheide rarely gives interviews. Earlier this year, she accepted to answer the questions of Perry Krootjes (of Dutch website Moov.nl).

Click here to read the interview.

Perry and Marga on August 15th

Here's the English translation for non-Dutch Luv' fans:

Marga Scheide was born on February 15th, 1954 in Amsterdam and worked as photo model for several years. In 1976, she became a Luv' singer with Patty Brard and José Hoebee. In 1978, Luv' recorded the theme song from the VPRO series "Het is weer zo laat!". They scored two number-one hits "You're the Greatest Lover" and "Trojan Horse" the same year. In 1979, the group received a Conamus Export Prize for being Holland's best export act. Their music was popular is countries like Germany, France and Switzerland.

In 1980, Ria Thielsch replaced Patty Brard. In 1981, the group broke up. José, Marga and Ria took part in a celebrity multi-sport event (Hitkrant Zomerspelen) the same year. They gave a farewell performance on the TV show "Nederland Muziekland". Between 1982 and 1986, Marga released solo records. In 1988, Luv's original line-up reunited on a TV charity show hosted by Mies Bouwman. Then Marga relaunched Luv' with two other singers (Diana van Berlo and Michelle Gold).

In 1990, British girl Michelle Gold left the female trio and was replaced by Carina Lemoine. The new Luv' was active until 1992. In 1993, the original trio and record producer Hans van Hemert gave an interview on the VARA TV program "De Verleiding". Patty, José and Marga performed on the popular TV program "Staatsloterijshow" and gave a memorable performance at the It Club in Amsterdam. Luv' also went on a promo tour through other European countries. The original Luv' trio remained active until 1996.

Luv' reunited once again in 2005 to celebrate the 40th business anniversary of Hans van Hemert. In May 2006, Luv' was one of the "super surprise acts" during three concerts of De Toppers at the Amsterdam ArenA. RTL 5 aired "Back In Luv" (a reality program about their comeback). Luv' was still popular and performed regularly in the Netherlands. In 2006, Marga took part in the first season of celebrity figure skating program "Sterren Dansen Op Het Ijs" on SBS 6 and finished ninth. She was the oldest female competitor. In 2011, she participated in the cooking program "Komen Eten" on SBS 6. Patty, José and Marga decided to disband later. Since 1999, Marga has a second home in Ibiza and still lives in Naarden, North Holland. Luv's last live performance took place at Dance Valley festival in 2012. Perry of Moov.nl talked to the friendly and smiling Marga Scheide in a restaurant in Hilversum for an interview for the internet site.

001. Did you play music before live performances?

Marga: No, we talked before our shows. We did it for 36 years and it became a routine. One day before the gig, we made sure that we had everything in mind. The technicians cared about the sound on the day we had to perform. We didn't need sound checks. We always sang the same songs. However we didn't do it with autopilot. Every performance was different.

002. How important is music in your private life?

Marga: Very important. It would be hard to spend holidays without music. Everywhere I go there's music. Even if I don't play an instrument. In the past, I wanted to take guitar lessons. But I didn't have the patience to do it.

003. What is your favourite sport? Do you still practise sport?

Marga: I only watch very important football matches on TV like the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. When I play tennis against Michiel (Marga's partner), it's hard to win, haha. It's because he used to be a tennis coach. He gives me advice so I can improve my technique.

004. Before your singing career you were photo model for six years. What do you think about these years?

Marga: My work as a photo model was a good way to make money. I also took part in beauty pageants: Miss Holland (1972, 1973 and 1977), Miss Young International 1973 and Miss Europe 1975. I liked to travel a lot because of these competitions. I went to America, Japan and many other countries. I had the opportunity to discover the world. I was very proud of my participation in Miss Young International 1973 in Japan. Everybody wanted to pose with me for photos. Even if they didn't know who I really was, haha.

005. You were a Luv' singer for 36 years. How important was Luv' for your career?

Marga: Yes it's true, 36 years. Sometimes there were years when we didn't perform. Luv' has been very important in my career. We were number one in Mexico and in Germany we were very successful. Germany is a bigger country and more people live there. You can make more money there than in the Netherlands. In 1976 when we started I knew less things than now. I made contributions to the concept of Luv'. Every week we met at the office to test new ideas. In 1988 I wanted to go on with Luv'. José had a child and Patty had other projects. Two singers were recruited to be part of a new trio. But I missed the original line-up very much.

006 If you had to name a Luv' track and a solo song you are the most proud of, which ones would they be?

Marga: As far as Luv' is concerned, I would choose "You're the Greatest Lover" from 1978. Because of the interaction with the audience. The aim of the track was to put the public's hands up in the air. And that's what happened. It was nice to see it.

As for my solo career, I would choose "Love Symphony" from 1983. The track was released with a white sleeve in the USA. People thought I was a black singer. The song aired on Black radio stations. When the record entered the charts, they wanted to shoot a music video. It was the end of the success of the song in America. They found out I was white. At the time white artists could not be broadcast on Black networks. Actually I could have been more successful with this track. "Love Symphony" was produced by Jacques Zwart (Marga's partner who died in 2003). In addition to his production work, Jacques was also arranger, lyricist and singer of the group "Het". He worked with Luv' and other bands. That's how we met.

007. In 2006 you took part in the TV program "Sterren Dansen Op Het Ijs"? Did you ice-skate before this talent show?

Marga: I did not ice-skate at all. When the producers of the show met me for the first time, I told them I didn't want to participate. Finally they convinced me and I appreciated my participation in the program. I had no regrets. My skating partner was the Czech David Szurman who was very nice. It was hard to learn ice-skating but it was also hard for David to adapt to someone who could not skate. He was very patient with me. We're still in touch when he comes to Holland. When the weather is right in the Netherlands, I tend to ice-skate. It's because of my participation in the TV program. I attended shows of "Holiday On Ice" to see David's performances. I didn't appreciate the fact that former ice skaters took part in the competition. That's how ex-skater Hein Vergeer won the contest. It's not fair towards other competitors who were less experienced.

008. In 2011, you competed in the cooking program "Komen Eten" (Dutch version of  "Come Dine With Me"). How did it happen?

Marga: I watched the first season on TV. Then the producers asked me for the second season. Every week there were four candidates who had to compete for four days. Every day one of them was the host and the other candidates had to rate the meal and the atmosphere. One episode featured Dutch celebrities. I think I'm a good cook. But the atmosphere is also important to me. I think it was nice to participate. My favourite dish (that I eat daily) is Sashimi. It's a Japanese dish made of raw fish with salmon and tuna accompanied by soy sauce and wasabi.

009. What can we expect from you in the future from a showbiz perspective?

Marga: I officially stopped my activities in showbiz in 2012. In 2016 Luv' will celebrate their 40th anniversary. It should be nice to celebrate it. Maybe fans will organize something. But nothing has been decided.

Benny Neyman: "Een dag in Parijs" (featuring José's background vocals)

Because of the recent Paris attacks which took the world by surprise and because I'm French, I would like to post a special YouTube video. In 1984, Dutch singer Benny Neyman (who died in 2008) released his most successful album "Het Zwart Goud" (produced by José Hoebee's late husband Will). The LP featured the Dutch #1 hit "Waarom Fluister Ik Je Naam Nog" and a beautiful ballad "Een Dag In Parijs" (A day in Paris). This song features the background vocals of José and is a fabulous tribute to the French capital. It has a special meaning nowadays. The text is beautiful.....

Patty's latest column about Sabia Engizek

Patty Brard's latest column for Weekend magazine deals with Rafael van der Vaart's ex-girlfriend Sabia Engizek. Her pregnancy has been front page news in the tabloid press in Holland and Germany (see news posted on October 8th, 2015). The young woman claims Rafael is the father.

Last week, Patty met Sabia for the first time on SBS 6's program "Thuis op Zondag" (see news posted on November 19th, 2015). Her column was written before her participation on "Mindmasters Live" with Sabia (see previous post).

"I don't know what to think about her. She just said "Hallo" and was immediately escorted by security and television people. Normally, the Sunday program "Thuis op Zondag" is about conviviality and chemistry between guests but because Sabia was there, other people were not allowed to sit next to her except presenters Dirk Zeelenberg and Kim-Lian van der Meij....there were restrictions. It was not allowed to ask how pregnant she was....," the former Luv' singer wrote.

The SBS 6 diva is amazed that Sabia reached a star status although she did nothing.

Mindmasters Live: disappointing viewing figures due to KPN outage

On November 20th, "Mindmasters Live" (mentalist talent show featuring Patty Brard in the jury) premiered on SBS 6. The TV show drew 529.000 viewers (market share: 10.2%) according to audience measurement company "Stichting KijkOnderzoek". These disappointing viewing figures are due to a major KPN outage in the Netherlands, leaving some 1.8 million people without television on Friday evening. KPN is a Dutch telecommunications company. SBS 6 decided to stream the TV program live on internet. "Because of KPN outage we lose a potential audience of one million viewers," the TV channel announced in a statement.

Mindmasters Live features 16 mentalists divided in two teams led by Walter Rolfo and Uri Geller. The contestants are judged by Dutch celebrities: Patty Brard, Lisa Michels (finalist of K3 zoekt K3), Jochem van Gelder (Patty's colleague on "Bonje Met Buren"), Monique Smit, Wolter Kroes, Boer Geert, Sabia Engizek, Peter R. de Vries, Kay Nambiar and Patricia Paay

Walter Rolfo, Patty Brard, Wolter Kroes and Uri Geller at the press presentation of "Mindmasters Live" (November 19th)

Mentalists Romen (from Uri's team) and Victor (from Walter's team) were eliminated from the competition. The presence of Sabia in the TV show was used as a publicity stunt and should have boosted the viewing figures. The ex-girl friend of Dutch footballer Rafael van der Vaart has been the target of the tabloid press in Holland and Germany for months because of her pregnancy. The young woman claims the father is Rafael. All eyes were on her on Friday evening. Infotainment websites (including Telegraaf.nl and AD.nl) paid more attention to her participation in the show than to the mentalists' acts.

Uri, Sabia and Walter

#MindmastersLive was a trending topic on Twitter. But the majority of tweets were negative. The program was described as "ridiculous", "soporific" and "boring" by a lot of viewers.

Here are some photos of Patty on Mindmasters Live:

Earlier today, several Dutch websites (including Telegraaf.nl and Nu.nl) revealed that Patty Brard would be a member of the jury of SBS 6's talent show "Mindmasters Live". She will have to judge the acts of 16 mentalists from the teams of Walter Rolfo and Uri Geller. The other judges are Dutch celebrities: Lisa Michels (finalist of K3 zoekt K3), Jochem van Gelder (Patty's colleague on "Bonje Met Buren"), Monique Smit, Wolter Kroes, Boer Geert, Sabia Engizek, Peter R. de Vries, Kay Nambiar and Patricia Paay.

The TV program will air tomorrow live on SBS 6 at 8.30 PM.

The winner of "Mindmasters Live" will be performing at the "Festival of Magic" in Saint Vincent in Italy.

Between 2008 and 2010, La Brard appeared on the high-rated paranormal talent show "De Nieuwe Uri Geller".
