Chimène van Oosterhout talking about food in Story and her dog on Pupclub.nl

The latest issue of Story magazine features an interview with Dutch media personality and former Luv' singer Chimène van Oosterhout. The talented brunette discusses food.

Click here to read an excerpt from the interview. Here's a translation in English:

Story: What is your first memory of food?

Chimène: I grew up in Curaçao and that was all about food. The whole day long. But what I really liked was the vanilla porridge we got in the morning. Delicious.

Story: What kind of food do you like and dislike?

Chimène: I like everything actually but I do pay attention to healthy food. That's why I gave up food including too much mold, yeast and sugar. I love for example blue cheese but I deliberately do not eat it. I don't eat anything that runs and flies. Sushi is a favorite, just like crème brûlée. You can wake me up for that at night.

Story: What kind of food do you give unexpected visitors?

Chimène: In winter I make a stew and in warmer months fish on the barbecue with some grilled vegetables. And those who like meat can get it. They shouldn't be bothered that I'm not a meat-eater.

Story: What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

Chimène: Insects, grasshoppers and worms. It happened in Vietnam. They are full of proteins. It is a strange idea to have a worm or an insect in your mouth.

Story: Who would you like to eat out with again and why?

Chimène: With my seventeen-year-old son Liam. He is very busy and I really consider it as something special when we eat somewhere together.

Moreover, in another interview posted on pupclub.nl on July 16th (click here to read it), Chimène talked about her dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Spotty.

Shock in Luv' Land - The Summer Media Circus of 1980: Patty Brard leaving Luv'

40 years ago, in July 1980, Luv' went through a difficult chapter in its history. This sad and unexpected moment impacted on Holland's greatest girl group.

The July 10th, 1980 edition of the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf featured an article announcing that Patty Brard was obliged to be on sick-leave for a month which caused Luv' to cancel all their projects for several weeks. At the time, the group's latest single "One More Little Kissy" was still on the record charts (see news posted on May 31st, 2020).

Such an event took everybody by surprise as the public image of the trio was excellent. Since 1978, the ladies had scored hit after hit (not only in their homeland but also abroad), collected awards and platinum records, traveled Europe with their private jet, performed on TV, toured the club circuit and graced the covers of magazines.

In May 1980, Luv' went on a memorable promo tour in Mexico (see article posted on May 10th, 2020). The highlights of this special trip were: the presentation of gold records (including one for "Si, Que Si" (the Spanish version of "Ooh, Yes I Do"), a press conference, photoshoots and the taping of TV shows. On this occasion, Patty met Italian record producer and music publisher Carlo Nasi (heir to the FIAT empire). It was love at first sight. At the time, Patty was divorcing Dutch TV star Ron Brandsteder. Rapidly, the enfant terrible of Luv' was not motivated to fulfill her commitments. She was fed up with the hectic schedule of the group. Tensions within the members of the pop trio appeared. In an interview published in Hitkrant magazine in early June 1980, Patty told: "It's too much. I'm in love with a man who lives far away from me. It's hard to combine with Luv'. Someday I'll have to make a choice".

Meanwhile, Luv' had big plans for the future. They were supposed to perform in the USSR, to take part in the Yamaha Music Festival in Japan and to star in a TV series. These projects could mean their breakthrough in new territories.

In his biography "The Story Of Luv'" published in May 2015 and forbidden one month later due to photo copyright issues, Peter Boonstra described the moment Patty became sick. The Luv' singer wanted to buy a house to live with her new lover and thus needed money. On July 7th, she asked her lawyer to arrange a loan with InterLUV' BV (the group's limited company owned by songwriters and producers, Hans van Hemert and Piet Souer, manager Pim ter Linde and the members of Luv').  Pim ter Linde was surprised when he received a call from this lawyer who had an unusual request from her client. It led to arguments and irritations. On July 9th, Patty saw a doctor: she suffered from stress and was obliged to be on sick-leave for a month. Unexpectedly, she escaped from Holland to go to Los Angeles where Carlo lived.

Dutch authors Michel van Egmond and Antoinnette Scheulderman also mentioned this particular story in their recent bestselling book "Patty: de negen levens van Patty Brard". Here's an excerpt:

As the pressure was so high and a multi-million Dutch Guilder contract was ready to be signed at the office of the record label Carrere in Paris, Patty left all of a sudden. Disappeared. Escaped. Nobody knew where she was, even Henk van der Meyden (editor-in-chief of Privé magazine and gossip columnist at De Telegraaf) didn't know it.

Antoinnette: Where were you?

Patty: In Los Angeles, Carlo and I lived in Hidden Hills. Then we moved to Pacific Palisades between Malibu and Santa Monica. I remember when Carlo asked me if I wanted to live in Los Angeles. I thought: "Yes, why not?". My sister told me: "You're going to do your shopping in paper bags". She thought it was so romantic and so American. So did I. Every time I had these brown bags I thought: I'm living it. I also went shopping at night. It was crazy to do it. I often went to Gelson's in Santa Monica. This is where the stars went shopping. It was a top life. I thought I had the world at my feet. Poor Carlo couldn't always stand it. I was like a dragon for this man. A couple of nights a week I was dancing with handsome Frenchmen in illegal clubs. He was at home reading Winston Churchill's memoirs and I went out with my mini skirt.

Antoinnette: Meanwhile the whole Netherlands were upside down: where was Patty Brard? Did you realize it?

Patty: When we visited Carlo's family in Europe, the butler who served breakfast brought us Dutch newspapers and I realized it. I read that I took advantage of him whereas I was just lunching with Carlo in Monaco and Freddy Heineken came in with one of these papers and was pointing at me saying: I've found her! I've found her!.

Antoinette: It was written that you had a nervous breakdown.

Patty: It was of course the legal history. I couldn't stand the pressure within the group anymore but I was suggested to exaggerate it. When you tell that you don't want to do work anymore, it is not a good reason. The only way to avoid penalties and claims was to tell that I suffered psychologically.

Antoinnette: Hans van Hemert was furious when you left.

Patty: He is still angry at me and I understand it. The stakes were so high. Hans had secured a 2 million royalty contract with Carrere but it was only valid for the original line-up of the group. The contract was broken when I left. There was so much anger.

Despite Patty's departure, Marga Scheide and José Hoebee tried to remain professional and took part in a sport event "Wielrennen tegen Luv'" (Cycling against Luv') as part of the Hitkrant's Zomerspelen (a summer multi-sport competition with Dutch celebrities sponsored by teen magazine Hitkrant).

Hitkrant - July 1980

As the days without Patty went by, the press kept on publishing articles about this showbiz saga of the summer. At first, the journalists didn't know where the larger than life Luv' lady was hiding. They found out later that she stayed in Carlo's house in California. Pim ter Linde kept on informing the media. According to him, the girl group was having a break and he hoped that Patty would come back.

Pim ter Linde and Hans van Hemert were trying to find a solution behind the scenes. A replacement had to be found very quickly as many legal obligations were scheduled. One thing was sure: Luv' had to go on with or without Patty. The owner of a club in Zevenhuizen, the Netherlands threatened Luv' to start legal action if the ladies did not perform. The group might pay 50.000 Dutch guilders if they didn't sing. To avoid this penalty, a new girl had to be recruited. But that's another story...

Patty Brard's latest news: Shownieuws, Comments on Jan Versteegh, Dionne Stax, Connie Witteman and Ralph Inbar, Interview in &C

Patty Brard backstage at Shownieuws on July 25th

Here are the latest viewing figures of SBS6's entertainment news program "Shownieuws" featuring Patty Brard as a showbiz expert:

* July 18th: 559.000 viewers/market share: 18.6%
* July 19th: 525.000 viewers/market share: 18.6%
* July 20th: 390.000 viewers/market share: 13.4%
* July 21st: 426.000 viewers/market share: 16.3%
* July 25th: 503.000 viewers/market share: 16.3%

Patty's comments about the Dutch showbiz are often discussed on the internet.

During the broadcast on July 19th, the diva dissed her ex-colleague Jan Versteegh. It was the second time in a short period that she did it. In the latest issue of Beau Monde magazine, Patty mentioned a former colleague (without saying his name) who was "very bossy and made her feel insecure" (see news posted on July 28th, 2020). Dutch media news website Mediacourant.nl posted on July 20th an article telling that Versteegh might be this mysterious colleague. Last year, La Brard and Jan Versteegh experienced trouble when they co-hosted SBS 6's infotainment program "6 Inside" (see news posted on May 11th, 2019).

On July 21st, the former Luv' singer talked about Dutch journalist Dionna Stax. Her secret love affair with media personality Humberto Tan caused a sensation in the Netherlands and even affected her career. She was supposed to be the new Eva Jinek and to present the Eurovision Song Contest. She was meant to become an A-list TV host. Her presentation of the Televizier gala (Dutch TV awards) was considered as a warm-up for the ESC. According to media experts, Dionne's performance at the Televizier Gala was disappointing. Patty thought that Stax missed the chance of becoming an important media personality.

On July 25th, Miss Brard and Shownieuws colleague Evert Santegoeds praised Dutch diva Connie Witteman (formerly known as Vanessa when she was a popular recording artist in the 1980s). Currently, Connie is not on good terms with Bart Ettekoven (who also works on Shownieuws) and recently criticized him on her Instagram account. Despite this conflict, Patty and Evert seem to appreciate Connie's photos and videos on social media.

* A couple of months ago, the tell-all book entitled "Patty: de negen levens van Patty Brard" (written by Michel van Egmond and Antoinnette Scheulderman) disappeared from Holland's most relevant bestseller list "De Bestseller 60" (see news posted on May 29th, 2020).  Previously, it spent eight weeks on this chart (including three weeks on the Top 5).

However, the sensationalist publication is still present on another list: #8 on Amazon.nl (Bestsellers in E-books biografieën & memoires). Excerpts from the book have been published and discussed in the press to keep it hot. On July 19th, Mediacourant.nl posted an article about Patty's comments in the book on Ralph Inbar with whom she co-presented the successful hidden camera TV show Bananasplit on TROS between 1983 and 1985. La Brard explained that she experienced a few #MeToo moments with Inbar

* The latest issue of Dutch magazine &C features an interview with Patty Brard. According to the larger than life entertainer, the Covid-19 crisis saved her from a burnout. Due to the coronavirus, the diva was obliged to be on lockdown for almost two months in Ibiza (see news posted on March 21st, 2020). Despite her hectic schedule on television, she was not happy in her life. "It was an eye-opener. I realized that something went wrong. Why did I have to cry? Why did I feel this way? Why did my skin look terrible? The lockdown had a good effect on my body," Patty told &C.

De Showbizzmoord (showbiz murder): The AVROTROS/NPO Radio 1 podcast series reveals who hired hitmen to kill Bart van der Laar!

Bart van der Laar in 1981

Between May 19th and June 30th, Dutch station AVROTROS/NPO Radio 1 aired the podcast series De Showbizzmoord. Click here to listen to the seven episodes.

Dutch journalists Lammert de Bruin and Babs Assink investigated the mysterious death of record executive and producer Bart van der Laar

Van der Laar was shot in his house in Hilversum, the Netherlands on November 10th, 1981. Three days later, he died from his wounds (see article posted on November 11th, 2016). He was involved in Carrere/CNR records in the late 1970s.  Luv' signed a 750.000 Dutch guilder deal with him in October 1979.

Van der Laar later ran the short-lived TTR label with his partners Ruud Wijnands and German publisher Rolf Baierle. In addition to Luv', his artist roster included Francis Goya, Corry Konings, Babe, Benny Neyman and Lenny Kuhr. He co-wrote "Het is een wonder", the Dutch entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1981 performed by Linda Williams. A feud over the authorship of this track followed.

After his murder, gay prostitute Martien Hunnik was arrested and convicted on the basis of a confession he made but later retracted. He was released from jail in the early 1990s. Van der Laar's death remained a mystery.

Hunnik then tried to get hold of his file and when he was refused, his lawyer and the public prosecutor requested a new trial. It became apparent that Hunnik was probably innocent. In addition, medical experts said that Hunnik was ‘very susceptible to suggestions’ and inclined to exaggerate at the time of his confession.

In 2016, Martien Hunnik was acquitted. One year later, Netherlands Public Prosecution Service announced that he received damages and apologies from the State (see news posted on April 25th, 2017).

In the final episode of the podcast series, journalists Lammert de Bruin and Babs Assink discussed an alternative scenario in the Van der Laar's case. It was suggested that two people known to Van der Laar (who are still alive today and whose names remain anonymous) most likely killed him on the orders of a business partner, Ruud Wijnants (who died in 2001).

According to the Supreme Court, the alternative scenario is 'very plausible'. Because the case is time-barred, there is no further investigation. The murderers' names should not be mentioned. One of them was Bart van der Laar's handyman and he knew him well. He would have pulled the trigger. He can be heard in the podcast in a distorted voice. But he continues to deny his involvement in the death of the flamboyant record producer.

José Hoebee in Story: "I just want my life back!"

The July 8th issue of Story magazine features an article about José Hoebee who has been struggling against a mysterious disease for almost a year. After the death of her husband, record producer Will Hoebee in 2012, the singer developed a tic. She sucks her lips and cheeks with her mouth. She has not been able to swallow normal food for months. She is obliged to eat space food and to drink beverages including enough vitamins and minerals to survive. Speaking is also painful to her.

All the medical exams that the former Luv' lady underwent could not give a diagnosis. In the meantime, she has lost 20 kilos.

José is convinced that if her teeth were removed her mysterious pain would decrease. Dutch dentists refuse her suggestion as her teeth are healthy. José is ready to go abroad to find a solution. She would like to wear dentures. "Hopefully there are dentists who want to help me even if I don't know if it's covered by insurance. It will surely cost a lot of money but I just want my life back," she says.

Giel Beelen sends angry Whatsapp messages to Patty Brard

On June 20th, after posting pictures of his romance on social media for several weeks, Giel announced on Instagram that his relationship with Malou was over.

Recently, the famous radio DJ told on RTL 4's infotainment show RTL Boulevard that he sent angry Whatsapp messages to Patty after she insinuated that he used his affair with Malou as a publicity stunt for First Dates.

Patty Brard on Shownieuws: viewing figures on July 13th and her opinion on face masks

On July 13th, SBS6's entertainment news program Shownieuws featured Patty Brard as a showbiz expert. The TV program drew 463.000 viewers (market share: 15.3%)

The diva gave her opinion about face masks whose use revived due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She would like everybody to wear them everywhere and not only in public transportation. She expressed her worries about tourists who travel to the Netherlands. "I see a lot of foreigners in Amsterdam and I don't understand why we don't have the same rules about masks all over Europe," Patty said.

The ex-Luv' singer compared the situations in Holland and Ibiza (where she had a second home). "In Spain, everybody wears face masks in the streets," she explained. Due to the virus, all the clubs and discos are closed on the party island. "It's fantastic. It feels like the Ibiza from the past," she told.

Patty thought that masks should always be obligatory in planes.

Patty Brard in Beau Monde: Luv', fellow celebrities, sex and TV

Patty Brard graces the cover of the latest issue of Beau Monde magazine. The SBS6 star discusses several subjects, including her recently published biography in which she criticized her former Luv' colleagues, Marga Scheide and José Hoebee.

"A reunion with Luv'? No never, even if they propose 200.000 euros per person. If I consider all the reasons to do it - attention, money and fun - I'm not interested. I don't need it. We already made two comebacks and it was always a 2-against-1 situation. Poor José was always in between: she was either pro-Marga and against me or it was the other way around," the diva asserts.

Miss Brard's bestselling publication (written by Michel van Egmond and Antoinnette Scheulderman) included cruel passages about Marga and José (see news posted on April 27th, 2020). Here's what Patty adds about the ex-Luv' singers in her interview in Beau Monde: "In the press, they reacted to the book in an ugly way (see news posted on March 28th, 2020). At first, I didn't want to talk about Luv' in my biography because I didn't want problems. But the writers didn't agree with me and insisted on me discussing Luv'. People with limited talent always go after the power another person has. That's exactly what happens with Luv': some colleagues want to be the boss because they are not gifted artistically."

Marga and José are not the only celebrities that Patty mentions. The Shownieuws star doesn't understand why Patricia Paay refuses to admit that Gordon helps her financially: "It's strange that Patricia denies it. Probably it has got to do with pride. But why aren't you proud that someone helps you?... There's no secret. She told other people about it. It's very nice of Gordon. It's proof that Dutch showbiz is not only about hate".

Moreover, La Brard explains that sex is overrated according to her.

The larger than life media personality also talks about her collaborations on television: "Kim-Lian van der Meij, Kees Tol, and Viktor Brand are nice colleagues. But there is one (that I don't want to name) who is very bossy and makes me feel insecure." She refuses to reveal his or her identity and on which network (SBS? RTL?) the problems with this fellow TV host happened.

Patty also tells that SBS6 tested Richard Groenendijk and her on the presentation of the new season of the reality show Paleis voor een Prikkie. This program was initially hosted by Frank Jansen and Rogier Smit who later joined RTL 4. "With Richard Groenendijk we taped a pilot of Paleis voor een Prikkie. Unfortunately, Talpa plans a new season with unknown hosts," she says.

40th anniversary of King Of The World by Sheila & B. Devotion (Luv's former label mates)

In October 1979, Luv' signed an exclusive and lucrative record deal with CNR (a label affiliated with the French company Carrere). Prior to this contract, Luv's previous label Philips/Phonogram already licensed the rights for some records (including You're the Greatest Lover, Trojan Horse and With Luv') to Carrere in Germany.

Among the label mates of the ladies at Carrere was French disco group Sheila & B. Devotion (fronted by pop singer Sheila) whose heyday coincided with Luv's glory years (1977 - 1980).

On June 27th, 1980 Carrere released the iconic LP entitled King Of The World by Sheila & B. Devotion. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of this legendary album, Warner Music France reissued it recently in three formats:

2LP+2CD+1DVD Collector's Edition: click here to buy a copy.

2 CD Deluxe edition: click here to buy a copy.

Red vinyl edition: click here to buy a copy.

The album is also available on the major online platforms (Spotify, Deezer and iTunes/Apple Music).

In addition to the eight original album tracks digitally remastered, the reissue of King Of The World includes exclusive remixes by Tom Moulton, Dimitri From Paris, Fred Falke, Young Pulse and Monsieur Willy as well as studio outtakes previously unreleased.

King Of The World was written and produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of American R&B band ChicIt included Sheila & B. Devotion's signature song Spacer which came out as a foretaste of the LP in November 1979.

King Of The World (which was released at the height of the Disco Sucks era) captures the Zeitgeist of 1979-1980: space conquest (Spacer), consumerism (Charge Plates and Credit Cards), Fashion world (Cover Girl). The LP also featured pure American R&B tracks like Your Love Is Good and Don't Go and uptempo pop-rock oriented songs like Mayday, Misery and King Of The WorldNile Rodgers told in interviews that Duran Duran loved this opus.

Sheila and Nile Rodgers discussing Spacer and the King Of The World Album

Spacer was an international chart hit: #18 on the UK Singles Chart, #8 on the Irish Singles Chart, #5 on the SNEP Singles Chart (France), #6 on the Italian Singles Chart, #9 on the Musikmarkt/Media Control Chart (Germany), #20 on the BT Hitlisten (Denmark), #14 on the Ultratop (Flanders - Belgium), #22 on the Nationale Hitparade (Netherlands), #19 on the Dutch Top 40 (Netherlands), #19 on the South African Singles Chart, #28 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (Billboard - USA) and #44 on the Dance Club Songs (Billboard - USA)

Spacer was sampled by Swedish band Alcazar for their 2001 hit Crying at the Discotheque (which peaked at #13 in UK and reached the Top 10 and Top 20 in other European countries (Germany, Benelux, Italy, Spain...) and even Australia).

Crying At The Discotheque by Alcazar (2001)

Ooh, Yes I Do by Luv' came out practically at the same time as Spacer (see news posted on November 10th, 2019). Luv' and Sheila & B. Devotion even performed their two big hits on two high-rated TV shows in Germany: Musikladen (broadcast on December 13th, 1979 on Radio Bremen) and ZDF's New Year Eve program Jetzt Geht Die Party Richtig Los! on December 31st, 1979.

Sheila and Will Hoebee (who started to date Luv' singer José at the time) posed for a photograph backstage at ZDF's show. In 1975, Will co-wrote and produced with Peter Koelewijn the pop hit Patrick Mon Chéri by Kiki and Pearly. In 1976, Sheila covered the track in French and had a hit record with it (400.000 copies sold in France). The picture of Sheila and Will (published in the January 9th, 1980 edition of Dutch teen magazine Hitkrantwas to commemorate the success of Patrick Mon Chéri.
