Hold on to love: 35th anniversary of Patty Brard's solo debut

1981 saw the debut of Patty Brard's solo career. The beautiful Indo-Dutch entertainer was the first ex-Luv' singer to go solo. Musically speaking, she chose an adult contemporary repertoire which was different from her Luv' recordings.

History

One of her first TV appearances as a former member of the girl group dated back to December 28, 1980. She was guest on "Jaaroverzicht Journaal 1980", a restrospective program broadcast by NOS that focused on the greatest media moments of 1980 (see article posted on December 31st, 2015). Her sudden departure from Luv' was then big news in Holland. Dressed in a strict trouser suit, she looked different from her usual sexy image. She expressed her feelings in a short interview. At the time, she had been replaced by Ria Thielsch and Luv's "My Number One" was doing well on the Benelux charts. Patty told that she left the group without anger though a lawsuit was filled between InterLUV' (the trio's limited company) and her. She wished Marga Scheide all the best. The beautiful blonde singer was indeed suffering from a nervous breakdown which brought Luv' to a standstill.

In February 1981, Patty released "Hold on to love" as a single. The R&B/soft pop-rock track was taken from her "All the way" LP. The album was recorded in the best studios in Los Angeles, CA and produced by Carlo Nasi who became her second husband in 1983. Carlo was a wealthy Italian music publisher, guitarist, songwriter and producer....as well as one of the heirs to the FIAT empire. He could afford the "crème de la crème" of session musicians for his lover. Legendary keyboard player Billy Preston, Brazilian percussionist Paulinho Da Costa and composer Richard Gibbs were hired on Patty's record. Their talent improved the diva's vocal range. "Hold on to love" was promoted on Holland's main TV shows (including TopPop, Telebingo, Nederland Muziekland). It became a hit single.

Bridget and Patty on "Six Degrees"

Bridget & Patty

On February 9th, Bridget Maasland anchored "Shownieuws" for the last time. As a regular collaborator on SBS 6's entertainment news show, Patty was present. She even paid tribute to her colleague in her latest column for Weekend magazine (see news posted earlier today).

After her departure from "Shownieuws", Miss Maasland is transferred to Net 5. Her working relationship with La Brard is not over. Soon the ladies will be working on an episode of Net 5's new reality program "Six Degrees". The TV show is named after the "Six degrees of separation" theory which says that all the humans are six or fewer steps away from each other. That's what Bridget told in a recent interview on Radio 100% NL.

Recap: José's backing vocals

José has been an experienced recording artist since the 1970s.

Recently, Hollandia Music released an eurosceptic carnival track "Neuro van de euro" performed by Dutch entertainer Johan Vlemmix. This satire against the European currency features the background vocals of José Hoebee. The former Luv' singer co-produced the track with her friend Frank Riesenbeck. She has remained very discreet about this anti-Euro song which is different from her public image. A German version of the single entitled "Neuro von der Teuro" has also come out.

Click here to buy a copy of the CD single "Neuro van de euro".
The song is also available on Deezer, Bandcamp and Spotify

It's not the first time that José recorded background vocals. In addition to her career with Luv' and her solo efforts, she has also been a backup singer for other artists. In the 1980s, some of her vocal contributions were not credited. Before the Milli Vanilli scandal, it was common practice in the music industry.

Luv' fan Co Rnz helped me to set up a list of recordings featuring José as a backing vocalist. I would like to thank him for his knowledge.
