Patty's memoirs on CPNB Top 100 (Best-Selling Books of 2020 in the Netherlands)

On January 20th, the Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (CPNB, "Collective Promotion for the Dutch Book"), a Dutch organization that includes representatives of bookstores and publishers, revealed the list of the 100 best-selling books of 2020 in the Netherlands. Click here to read the complete list.

The tell-all book entitled "Patty: de negen levens van Patty Brard" (written by Michel van Egmond and Antoinnette Scheulderman) reached Nr. 94 on CPNB Top 100 and sold more than 24.000 copies. The publication came out on Patty Brard's 65th birthday on March 25th, 2020. It generated lots of publicity in the media (especially the tabloid press as the TV diva mentioned many celebrities (including ex-husbands Ron Brandsteder, Carlo Nasi and René Muthert, colleagues from the showbiz (Ralf Inbar, Bridget Maasland, André Hazes, Patricia Paay, Gordon, John de Mol...), ex-lovers (like Eric Peute who was the reason for her bankruptcy in the 1990s), international music legends (Freddy Mercury, Steve Strange...). A spectacular release party was supposed to be held at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam. But this event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the promotion of the biography, Patty was on total lockdown on Ibiza and gave many interviews on Skype.

In her memoirs, La Brard also discussed Luv', the girl group that made her the media personality she is today. She criticized José Hoebee and Marga Scheide. Click here to read my article about what the ungrateful prima donna told about Luv'

Marga Scheide in Weekend

Last week's issue of Weekend magazine featured an interview with Marga Scheide. The former Luv' singer told that she helped in a cat shelter in Ibiza and that the anti-Covid-19 measures were less strict on the Balearic island than in the Netherlands. She also discussed her relationship with media tycoon John de Mol in the 1980s and her current happiness with her partner, Michiel GunningMoreover, she explained that her guest appearances during Piv Huvluv's shows in Belgium were postponed to September due to the coronavirus. To this day, Marga only gave one performance with the Flemish comedian last autumn at the Bruges Royal City Theatre (see news posted on October 18th, 2020).

Dennis Schouten leaves Radio Veronica (Talpa) due to Patty Brard's complaint to John de Mol

Dennis Schouten Vs Paul Römer

RoddelPraat is an entertainment news show hosted by the young reporter Dennis Schouten and the controversial media personality Jan Roos on YouTube. The two gentlemen often diss Dutch celebrities. One of their favourite targets is Patty Brard. A section of their program entitled "Patty Patty Patty" even deals with the latest news of the ex-Luv' singer.

Jan Roos is persona non grata at John de Mol's media company Talpa Network which owns Talpa TV (SBS6, Net5, Veronica, SBS9) and Talpa Radio (including Radio Veronica). Until recently, his young sidekick Dennis Schouten worked as a freelancer on Wilfred Genee's radio and TV shows (Radio Veronica and Veronica Inside). Patty and other Dutch celebrities complained about RoddelPraat due to "tasteless jokes". Moreover, the diva and her Shownieuws colleagues criticized Dennis Schouten earlier this month after he couldn't find Ferry Doedens at his home, following the revelations about his OnlyFans adult activities (see news posted on January 19th, 2021)

Last week, Dennis Schouten was summoned to the office of Paul Römer, managing director of the radio and television department at Talpa Network. The TV and radio executive gave the 25-year-old man an ultimatum - he could either stop co-hosting RoddelPraat with Jan Roos or he was fired from Talpa. Dennis chose his collaboration with Jan instead of his freelance work for the powerful media company. He explained this situation on the January 20th episode of RoddelPraat. On the same episode, the "Patty Patty Patty" section was about La Brard visiting her mother who had been ill and her complaint about RoddelPraat to John de Mol

On January 27th episode, the RoddelPraat guys mentioned Patty's recent Instagram picture with her mother and her daughter (see news posted earlier today). Initially, Patty and Priscilla posed with 91-year-old grandma Brard without face masks for the photo. After receiving messages from unhappy fans who told Patty that she should wear a mask to protect her mother from the Covid-19, the prima donna removed the photo and replaced it by another one showing her daughter and herself wearing a mask.

Patty Brard on TV: Shownieuws, Vier Handen Op Een Buik, 5 Uur Show

 * Here are the latest viewing figures of SBS6's entertainment news program Shownieuws (featuring Patty Brard as a showbiz expert):

  • January 16th: 713.000 viewers/market share: 15,1%
  • January 18th: 519.000 viewers/market share: 15,4%
  • January 29th: 594.000 viewers/market share: 14,3%

On yesterday's edition of Shownieuws, the diva talked about Dutch former professional footballer Dirk Kuyt who recently had Botox injections. TV viewers were shocked when they saw Kuyt's new face on Ziggo Sport on Thursday evening. So was Patty. "I have to tell you honestly: I am not that much in favor of men using fillers and botox," she said. The ex-Luv' singer who often uses Botox asked the opinion of her plastic surgeon about Dirk Kuyt. "My doctor said:" This man should have done only one thing, nothing," Miss Brard explained. Kuyt was also criticized by René van der Gijp and Johan Derksen on Veronica's talk show Veronica Inside

Patty's new puppy

Until recently, Patty Brard had two dogs named Bibi & Lulu. Her pets even inspired the publication of a children's book (see news posted on November 6th, 2020). Unfortunately, Lulu died one month before the book came out and was survived by Bibi (see news posted on October 3rd, 2020).

Earlier today, the former Luv' singer posted on Instagram a picture of her new puppy named Bobbie.

Winter 1985 - 1986: 35th anniversary of Red Light (album + single) by Patty Brard

Front cover of  the "Red Light" album by Patty Brard

35 years ago, Patty Brard wanted to give a boost to her singing career with the release of the dance-pop single "Red Light" taken from her third studio album of the same name.

History

After her departure from Luv' in the summer of 1980, Patty was very active and wanted to prove that she could be successful on her own. With the support of her then highly influential husband, Italian music publisher and record producer Carlo Nasi, she released solo records (including "Hold On To Love" which became a hit single in the Netherlands, Belgium and South Africa in 1981). The follow-up records flopped.

For two years (1983-1985), the all-round entertainer found her salvation on television. She co-hosted the popular hidden camera TV show "Bananasplit" with Ralf Inbar on TROS. The former Luv' singer also had the privilege to present the 1985 edition of the "Sanremo Festival" on RAI Uno in Italy with Pippo Baudo (see article posted on February 7th, 2020). Miss Brard was hoping for a breakthrough in Dante's country. But the ex-Luv' lady did not achieve her goal.

Because she settled down in Los Angeles, CA, with Carlo, the diva had plans in America. She was rumoured to be involved in American TV series (including a role in a sequel to "Charlie's Angels" and in "Falcon Crest"). But these projects never materialized.

In late 1985, La Brard hit the wall and had to move on. Carlo and she launched a record label named "Striped Horse" (a division of Allegiance Records) which released her "Red Light" album and exclusive material of Ike & Tina Turner

In an article published in the Dutch newspaper Limburgs Dagblad on December 21st, 1985, details about Patty's latest record were given. Carlo Nasi recruited sought-after session musicians for his wife's LP, the way he did for her previous albums. Richard Page and Steve George (of American rock band Mr. Mister) recorded background vocals on a couple of songs. Eddie Kendricks (formerly of the Motown vocal group The Temptations) sang a duet entitled "Tender Love" with Patty. Greg Mathieson was in charge of the arrangements. Trevor Veitch co-produced the album with Carlo Nasi. Veitch was very productive in the 1980s. Among the singers he worked with were Toni Basil ("Mickey") and Laura Branigan ("Gloria"). The Red Light album also featured the Woman In Love single that came out earlier in 1985 when Patty presented the Sanremo Festival

The LP came out with Red Light as the lead single. This track was written by Trevor Veitch and Jai Winding. Winding later became the musical director of Madonna's world tours "Blonde Ambition" (1990) and "Girlie Show" (1993).

Another essential element was the music video for "Red Light" that was shot by Dutch director Allan van Rijn in Frascati (near Rome) and featured extras who had previously appeared in Federico Fellini's movies. According to Van Rijn, it was the most expensive music video ever made for a Dutch artist.

In addition to her musical activities, Patty was often invited to public events. In January 1986, she was one of the guests of the Horecava, a Dutch annual hospitality trade fair held at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre. She promoted several products including milk and the Pit-Pat game (a combination of pool (cue sports) and minigolf).

Two other songs taken from the Red Light album were released as singles later in 1986: Tender Love (with Eddie Kendricks) and Over My Head (a cover version of a minor hit single by Toni Basil that reached #81 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the US Dance Chart in early 1984).

Over My Head by Toni Basil (1983)

The Red Light LP also included a cover version of Dancing In The Dark (initially performed by Kim Wilde - the original single peaked at #67 in the UK, #26 in Germany and was a Top 10 hit in Denmark, Finland and Switzerland in 1983).

When Patty promoted her records in the media, she expressed her intention to have an international career. She wanted to be part of the "American dream". Red Light didn't achieve the desired results. Due to its lack of popularity, Patty interrupted her music career for several years and focused on TV projects.

Currently, the Red Light album is available on the major digital platforms (including Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, YouTube and Spotify).

TV performances
  • German program Bitte umblättern on Südwestfunk/ARD featured a report about Carlo and Patty on the Côte d'Azur. Excerpts from Isn't It Everything and Red Light were shown.
  • On January 1st, 1986, Patty sang a Dutch duet "Toen het vuurwerk in Abcoude werd ontstoken" with Willem Ruis on VARA's program Sterrenshow. She also performed Red Light.
  • On January 4th, 1986, Miss Brard performed Red Light and Tender Love (with Eddie Kendricks) on Veronica's talk show Tineke
  • The singer performed Red Light on two NCRV's shows Los Vast on January 21st, 1986 and Popsjop on February 11th, 1986.
  • The Red Light music video was broadcast on Veronica's music show Countdown.

  • In 1986, Patty sang Red Light on RAI 1's music show Discoring in Italy.

Chart performance

All the essential ingredients for success were there: a well-produced catchy song and a great video. However, the Red Light single was a minor hit in Holland. It missed the Dutch Top 40 and only peaked at #48 on the Nationale Hitparade in early February 1986.

From Best With Luv'...

Photo edited by Co Rnz

Two days ago, Dutch comedian and singer Rob Kemps won the final of De Slimste Mens (The Smartest Person), a TV quiz on KRO-NCRV/NPO 2. The program attracted 3.260.000 viewers (market share: 37.4%) and was Holland's most-watched TV show on January 22nd according to Dutch audience measurement company Stichting KijkOnderzoek.

Rob Kemps: winner of De Slimste Mens

Rob Kemps is the frontman of the highly popular party band Snollebollekes that has already scored 10 hits on the Dutch Single Top 100 and one single on the Flemish Ultratop since 2013. The Snollebollekes album entitled "...En Dooralso reached the Dutch Album Top 100 and the Flemish Ultratop 200 albums chart in 2017.

Snollebollekes won several Party Awards and peaked at #1 on both the Verrückte Top 538 on Radio 538 and the Q-Music Top 500 Van Het Foute Uur

But their biggest achievements are their huge live shows. In 2019, Snollebollekes managed to sell out their GelreDome concerts in Arnhem within 20 minutes. Due to the rapid sale of 60,000 tickets, Snollebollekes were the first Dutch party band to receive a star on the GelreDome Walk Of Fame

In the same year, they were one of the guest stars during two mega concerts of De Toppers (a supergroup consisting of René Froger, Gerard Joling, Jeroen van der Boom and Jan Smit) at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam. In the autumn, they plan to perform at the GelreDome again.

Why do I mention Rob Kemps on my blog? The young entertainer is originally from Best, a small town in North Brabant near Eindhoven. Former Luv' singer José Hoebee was also born in Best and still lives there. Her son used to be a schoolmate of RobIn late 2019, the songstress posed with the leader of Snollebollekes and his music publisher Robin Logjes as well as Luv's producer Hans van Hemert for a photograph at the Quatre Bras restaurant in Best.

At the time, Luv' had already interrupted their activities due to José's ill health. Earlier that year, on May 18th, 2019, the ladies shared the stage with Snollebollekes during the "Boulevard op Stelten" party in Harderwijk, the Netherlands.

The Luv' singers were supposed to perform again with Snollebollekes at the Velohal in Wateringen, the Netherlands on April 20th, 2020. But Luv' stopped in February 2020 after it remained uncertain when the group could return to the stage. The concert was eventually cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Best is the place where José as a youngster dreamt of being a renowned singer. Here's what she told American author James Arena in his book "Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition" published in 2015 and reissued in 2018: "When I was six years old, my father said he realized I would be an artist of some kind. He was right. I was never going to be a nine-to-five girl. As a child, I would sing in the house with the windows open - I suppose I was hoping some manager or producer would hear me. That didn't happen, so I began singing folk and rock.."

When she was 15 years old, José made her debut in a folk & country band (Young Tradition) with her two sisters (Marijke and Yvonne) and her best friend Ad van Genechten. The group toured the folk circuit in North Brabant inspired by the music of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Donovan.

Young Tradition (Yvonne, José, Marijke & Ad)

In 1971, they were discovered by record producer Piet Souer on a talent show "Het cabaret der onbekenden" (the cabaret of the unknowns) in Eindhoven. One year later, Young Tradition took part in a TV talent show "Nieuwe Oogst" (New Harvest) on AVRO channel and they finished second.

In 1976, José, Marijke and Yvonne formed a new group named after the first single they recorded with Piet Souer: "Elongi". It was a cover version of a classic of Makossa and World Music initially performed by Cameroonian singer Ekambi Brillant in 1975.

Elongi (José, Marijke & Yvonne)

Shortly after that, Souer asked José to join a girl group he was forming with Hans van Hemert: Luv'. The two other members were Marga Scheide and Patty Brard. Between 1977 and 1981, Luv' scored hit after hit (including You're the Greatest, Trojan Horse, Casanova and Ooh, Yes I Do) in Continental Europe and beyond. In 1979, Luv' were "Holland's best export act". In August 1980, Patty Brard was replaced by Ria Thielsch. In early March 1981, Luv' disbanded after selling 7 million records worldwide and earning 15 gold and platinum awards. The group later made several comebacks and went through line-up changes.

Luv's original trio: José Hoebee, Marga Scheide & Patty Brard (1977)

In late 1981, José went solo. Between 1982 and 1985, she scored her biggest hits with cover versions of pop standards on the Dutch and Flemish charts. Her version of Little Peggy March's I Will Follow Him hit the number one spot in the Low Countries in July 1982 and sold 100.000 copies. The follow-up single "Secret Love" (a cover version of Doris Day's hit) peaked at #11 on the Dutch Top 40 and #3 on the BRT Top 30 in Belgium in the autumn of 1982.

In late 1983, José and TV personality  Ron Brandsteder recorded "So Long, Marianne". Their version of this Leonard Cohen's classic reached #6 on the Nationale Hitparade, #11 on the Dutch Top 40 and #20 on the BRT Top 30.

In the summer of 1984, José experienced a new phase in her career. She formed with her longtime friend Bonnie St. Claire a duo known as "Bonnie & José". The ladies recorded Dutch cover versions of ABBA songs  Their first collaboration was "Cassandra" (#24 on the Dutch Top 40 and #19 on the Nationale Hitparade). In July 1985, "Zoals Vrienden Doen" (the cover of ABBA's The Way Old Friends Do) by Bonnie & José reached #36 on the Dutch Top 40 and #18 on the Nationale Hitparade. It became the signature song of the duo. In the autumn of 1985, Bonnie & José released an album entitled "Herinnering". This LP was recently reissued on CD and DVD.

In spite of her career with Luv' and her solo projects, José always remained close to her best friend Ad. After Young Tradition, Ad formed the folk band Dommelvolk with Bert Spin (accordion, harmonium), Steeph Custers (violin, vocals) and Jitze Kopinga (double bass, guitar, vocals). The group was active between 1977 and 1984. It was reformed in 2000 and performed sporadically until 2015. José sang with Dommelvolk on several occasions.

José & Ad

After the death of record producer Will Hoebee (José's husband) in 2012, Ad was a great comfort to the ex-Luv' lady. After leaving her apartment in Lommel, Belgium, José moved to Hilversum (Holland's media city) and became Ad's neighbour. On April 17th, 2015, Ad died. José decided to move back to Best.

In the meantime, she reunited with Marga Scheide and Ria Thielsch to relaunch Luv'. The ladies toured the nostalgia circuit successfully in the Netherlands and Belgium. British born entrepreneur David Hay Gibson (who settled down in Best with his husband Leonbecame Luv's tour manager.

Luv' and David in Spain in June 2018

Prior to his collaboration with the pop trio, David and Leon became extremely involved in Best after starting up their company, “Van Diepen Gibson druk & vormgeving” in the mid-1980s. They set up a tennis tournament which then became the “Van Diepen Gibson Open Dubbel Toernooi” which was held yearly. They also sponsored the annual Carnival in Best. David was asked to join the Carnival Federation in Best to help improve the “podium presentation” of the yearly Prince and select and arrange the costumes. He also sponsored and helped bring the 2nd leg of the "Tour De France" to and through Best in 1996. David and Leon were members of the “Best Business Club”. In 1997, they received the "citizen’s award for services to the community". In 2004, they were awarded the “Business Men Of The Year Award” for their contribution to business in Best.

In addition to Rob Kemps and José Hoebee, two other singers born in Best reached fame in the Netherlands: the former child stars, brothers Rick and Ralf Mackenbach. In the 2000s and 2010s, Rick appeared in TV series, films and musicals.

Rick Mackenbach

Ralf won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2009. He also took part in the celebrity figure skating competition "Sterren Dansen op het IJs" and the diving competition "Sterren Springen(aka Celebrity Splash) on SBS6.

Ralf Mackenbach

Ralf is now a talented scientist. After he graduated secondary school with a VWO certificate, he studied at the TU Eindhoven. In 2019, he finished a master's degree in nuclear fusion, for which he wrote the dissertation "Numerical modelling of mode penetration in cylindrical geometries using M3D-C1"In 2020, he officially became a nuclear physicist.

David Hay Gibson is a good friend of Rick and Ralf's parents. He even accompanied the Mackenbach family in Kiev for the finals of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
