Patty Brard: the racism debate goes on Shownieuws

On June 12th, Patty Brard appeared as a showbiz expert on SBS6's entertainment news program Shownieuws which drew 480.000 viewers (market share: 14.6%).

Her colleagues and she discussed the racism debate following the murder of black American George Floyd and its consequences on the Dutch entertainment industry.

The Shownieuws team mentioned an old sketch of Diederik Ebbinge in which he mimicked a Surinamese accent. Dyantha Brooks said: "Humour is about mimicking other accents. It makes me think about Jandino who mimics a woman with an accent from The Hague". Patty replied: "Now it's not allowed to do it anymore! I understand it but I think that these thoughts about questioning history have gone too far. This kind of humour belongs to the past. We have learned from our mistakes and now we have to move on...Jandino and Jörgen Raymann also mimic accents".

Previously, Patty collaborated with the popular comedian Jandino Asporaat. She was the guest on his talk show (see news posted on November 21st, 2012). She took part in the filming of a Christmas episode of his series FC Kip (see news posted on December 22nd, 2013). She appeared in panel games with him: Wie Ben Ik? (see news on November 26th, 2013), Alles Mag Op Vrijdag (see news posted on June 7th, 2014) and De Gordon tegen Dino Show (see news posted on April 14th, 2019). Jandino and she were part of the Dutch cast of comedians who voiced characters in De Emoji Film (the Dutch version of the 3D computer-animated comedy film "The Emoji Movie")

Moreover, La Brard referred to old pictures on Shownieuws: "I have youth pictures of myself with Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet. Do I have to get rid of them? It was just the zeitgeist back then".

She also talked about an old class photo that she posted recently on Instagram: "Everybody said: "You're the only dark-skinned girl in the class!" I didn't mean it this way. I was not "the black girl in the class". All I want to say is: there are so many touchy issues nowadays that you cannot post an old class photo".

Earlier this month, the former Luv' singer already took part in the Blackout Tuesday, a global action to protest against racism and police brutality (see news posted on June 6th, 2020). The June 8th edition of Shownieuws included a touchy discussion about Dutch rapper Akwasi and his anti-racism speech (see news posted on June 11th, 2020).
