The June 8th edition of Shownieuws included a touchy discussion about Dutch rapper Akwasi.
Shortly after protests seeking justice for George Floyd (an African-American who was killed on May 25th, 2020 during a police arrest) began in the United States, people in the Netherlands protested to show solidarity with Americans and to demonstrate against issues with police or racism. Vigils and protests of up to thousands of participants have taken part nationwide.
Akwasi caused controversy and was accused of inciting hatred and violence due to a statement he made against Zwarte Piet at an anti-racism demonstration in Amsterdam last week. While the musician and poet said his words were meant to bolster people's refusal to accept racism and discrimination, some took offence in his speech that day.
"The moment I see a Zwarte Piet, I will personally kick him in the face," he reportedly said as part of his speech. His management said it was a metaphorical remark and not to be taken as a motivation for violence.
Patty mentioned Akwasi on Shownieuws. She understood his anger but didn't appreciate his brutal way to express himself. The ex-Luv' singer preferred instead Beyoncé's message posted on Instagram. The Grammy-winning artist is one of several celebrities using their social media platforms to demand change in the wake of Georges Floyd's death. "The calm she (Beyoncé) radiates is opposed to the screams I have been hearing recently," Patty told. "I don't care what point you want to make, but keep calm and pay attention to your words,” the diva said about Akwasi's speech.
Last week, Patty took part in the Blackout Tuesday, a global action to protest racism and police brutality (see news posted on June 6th, 2020). The action, originally organized within the music industry in response to the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor took place on June 2nd.

* Moreover, due to the COVID-19 crisis, RTL 5 has decided to rerun old episodes of the reality show Hotter Than My Daughter (hosted by Patty Brard). These episodes were taped when La Brard worked as a freelancer on Dutch TV in late 2018 and early 2019 before her latest contract with Talpa TV. The rerun of episode 5 attracted 147.000 viewers (market share: 2.4%) on June 8th.
