Patty Brard in Vrouw Glossy: "The only addiction I miss is food"

Patty Brard graces the cover of the latest issue of Vrouw Glossy, the luxurious sister of VROUW Magazine (supplement of De Telegraaf (Holland's most-read newspaper). Click here to read an excerpt from her interview. The larger than life media personality discusses her gastric bypass and its consequences.

Vrouw proposed two covers featuring the ex-Luv' singer and asked its followers on Instagram which one they preferred.

Here's a translation of the article in English:

Patty Brard (65) looks slimmer than ever, and that's really not only because of her gastric bypass, which ultimately made her lose 35 pounds. The TV presenter does not drink a drop of alcohol anymore and is done with partying. "I rest and I sleep a lot!" she asserted.

Vrouw: In 2017 you were fired from SBS6 because you were no longer "fresh and fruity". Was it the reason why you underwent a gastric bypass?

Patty: When I was dismissed, I said to myself: "The party's over: TV, showbiz, everything". I wanted to focus on myself, on my weight and health. I weighed 97 kilos with a height of 1 meter 72. I could have started another diet, but a doctor told me it would take years. I just didn't have that time. Long story short: I saw no other solution than a gastric bypass. Even though my BMI was a bit too low for that to be done in the Netherlands. Actually, I had to continue eating first! Because I didn't want to wait until my BMI would be 35, I went to Belgium, it was possible there. And I skipped the year of psychological counselling before the surgery.

Vrouw: And now you are size 36!

Patty: Yes, it's wonderful

Vrouw: No more rock and roll?

Patty: After the operation, the doctor said: "Well, from now on you won't drink another drop of alcohol".

Vrouw: Could you stop drinking immediately?

Patty: I was so determined so I stopped drinking. I never felt the need for alcohol again after my surgery. The main thing is mental strength, which is bigger than the physical addiction. If you are really resolute, you don't do it anymore. It also has to do with the fact that I am not addictive. The only addiction I miss is food. I would like to eat as much as my husband does.

Vrouw: Would you recommend a gastric bypass to anyone seriously overweight?

Patty: No, absolutely not. People who think this is the one and only solution really have not understood it, because it only starts after the operation. You have to live an incredibly healthy and disciplined life. And if you can't do it, the consequences are much worse. I have to eat every two hours, even when I'm not hungry. Furthermore, it is not a pleasant feeling, because you actually live with a feeling of appetite all the time. And if you eat something wrong or eat too much, you can get very sick. There are also people who miss their old body terribly. I'm glad I did it but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But I am no longer in the target group of victims of diabetes. Because maybe I could have died of it, just like my little brother. So yes, it has been worth it to me. I just want to live healthy for another twenty years.

Vrouw: You used to be wild in your younger years. Now you have a more conventional life. Do you agree?

Patty: I actually think it's pathetic when I see people my age still drinking and partying just to stay young. At least now I can sleep all night long. When the laundry is done, ironed and folded in the cupboard, and the house is clean, then I am happy. Maybe boring, but it is so good. Getting up without a hangover is just about the best thing I've ever felt! I prefer to stay at home now.
