The Best of 2014

2014 saw the release of a Luv' compilation by Universal Music Germany. 

José Hoebee had a new manager (Dennis van Korven) for six months. After two difficult years, she had new projects (a makeover, a single entitled "Noheyo" and a string of live performances during the summer....). Good news: Patty Brard and her were reconciled after months of misunderstanding.

As always, La Brard has been busy on television (Shownieuws, Bonje met de buren, Patty's Big Fat Ibiza Wedding...). Her wedding with architect Antoine van de Vijver hit the headlines in September.

Marga Scheide was very discreet. She confirmed the news about the publication of the long-awaited Luv' photo book (a project supervised by Peter Boonstra).

* The Best of Luv'

Universal Music Germany released "The Best of Luv" in January. This compilation featured the singles from the group's heyday (1977-1981) as well as albums tracks.

Because he wanted to boost José's career, her manager Dennis van Korven conceived a new site for the singer as well as a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

* Patty in "Utopia" 

The diva visited the candidates of SBS 6 high-rated reality show "Utopia" (conceived and produced by John de Mol's Talpa company). 

"Utopia" centres on 15 people living on a piece of land near Laren and attempting to build up a new community. They have been provided with a shed, two cows, some chickens, water and electricity connections, a telephone and a safe with €10,000.

The group are under the watchful eye of 98 cameras. As well as the daily show, viewers can follow events live via the internet and take part in voting who should leave the site.

* José turns 60!!!! 

On  March 29th, José enjoyed a surprise party for her 60th birthday. Her friends (including TV personality Viola Holt and former Luv' colleague Marga) were there.

* Bonnie & José: feud?

Bonnie St. Claire and José Hoebee have been friends for 35 years. In the 1980s, they formed a duo to perform cover versions of ABBA songs in Dutch. Last year, they relaunched their partnership. In 2014, they fell out with each other.

* Patty's Big Fat Ibiza Wedding: a flop

Between late August and early October, SBS 6 aired "Patty's Big Fat Ibiza Wedding" (a reality show about the wedding of La Brard with Antoine). Unfortunately, the program drew few viewers, despite the publicity in the media.

SBS 6 aired "Bonje met de buren" (featuring Patty Brard and Jochem van Gelder) between late August and early October. This reality program deals with trouble between neighbours and was successful. A new season has been ordered for 2015.

BNN/NPO 3 game show "Ranking the Stars: Ho Ho Ho" (hosted by Paul de Leeuw) featured Patty Brard and other Dutch celebrities. It drew 356.000 viewers (market share: 6.7%).

Shownieuws: viewing figures on December 23rd and 24th

* The 11.00 P.M edition of "Shownieuws" featured Bridget Maasland, Patty Brard and Leco van Zadelhoff on December 23rd. The SBS 6 entertainment news show attracted 792.000 viewers (market share: 16.1%).

* Yesterday, the 11.00 P.M edition of "Shownieuws" dealt with weddings, love affairs and break-ups. Of course, Patty's Big Fat Ibiza Wedding was mentioned. The program drew 555.000 viewers (market share: 9.3%).

True Luv': 35th anniversary

Luv's third album, True Luv', entered the Dutch charts 35 years ago. A wonderful collection of fresh and catchy pop songs.

History

In the summer of 1979, Luv' and their producers and songwriters, Hans van Hemert and Piet Souer, planned to leave Philips/Phonogram Records (the label which had released the group's records for two years). José Hoebee, Patty Brard, Marga Scheide and their team signed a 750.000 Dutch guilder contract with CNR/Carrere Records (see Chapter III of the group's biography). With this new deal considered by newspaper De Telegraaf as the "show business transfer of the year", Luv's challenge was to prove that after one year and a half of mainstream success the trio could still score hits.

The first album of the ladies released by CNR/Carrere was entitled True Luv'. It was recorded at the famous Wisseloord Studios. This opus is a mixture of Pop music, Disco, Latino sounds and Schlager.

Two songs from this LP were released as singles: "Ooh, Yes I Do" and "Ann-Maria" which were instant hits in several European countries. In order to conquer the Latin American market, Spanish versions of these tracks were recorded. This strategy paid off as "Si, que si" (Yes I Do) turned gold in Mexico.

Commercial response and chart performance

As a manufactured pop group which targeted youngsters, Luv' were more successful on the singles chart than on the albums chart. Indeed, 7" singles were popular among teenagers in the 1970s. True Luv' entered the Dutch hit parade on December 15th, 1979. It later peaked at #13 on the LP Top 50 and #7 on the Nationale Hitparade Top 50 in the Netherlands.  The album eventually turned gold in Holland (50.000 copies).
